Garden in the middle of meadows, Chlum u Třeboně, South Bohemia

Designing a garden for a client in Chlum u Třeboně was an exciting challenge. The client had recently purchased a house and wanted to update the landscaping, originally designed in the 1990s when the house was built. The first step was to remove the overgrown shrubs at the front of the house and replace them with lighter, more sustainable herbaceous planting. We selected species that thrive in the hot, dry conditions of the site, attract a variety of insects, and blend seamlessly with the surrounding meadows.

The existing pergola, which had seen better days, needed replacing, and a new tool shed was required. Given the site's limitations and strict planning regulations, we approached the design thoughtfully. Our goal was to find a new solution for covered outdoor seating that would also serve as a space for family gatherings. The result is a traditional barn-like structure that replaced the old pergola, providing a versatile area for socializing. In the summer, the large doors on both sides can be opened, creating an airy atmosphere, while the large window offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. During colder months, the shed can be closed and heated with a log burner, extending its use into spring and autumn, providing a cosy space for family gatherings or quiet moments for the owner to find inspiration for writing.

Both new buildings were strategically placed to frame an area dedicated to the kitchen garden, with vegetable beds and fruit bushes. The garden naturally flows into the surrounding landscape, with the orchard serving as the only clear boundary, creating a seamless connection between the home and nature.
