Courtyard Garden in Rural South Bohemia
This small courtyard garden, designed for a family living in rural South Bohemia, presented a variety of challenges that required a sensitive, thoughtful approach. The courtyard is bordered by buildings of different uses, including the entrance to a rental apartment, the main house entrance via an existing conservatory, and a large barn gate that had to be preserved without altering the terrain. There are also entrances to a side building that serves as a storage area, as well as the future site for a sauna and wellness space. The accumulation tank, located in the centre of the courtyard, prevents any vegetation from thriving above it, adding another layer of complexity to the design.
Additionally, there was a clear request to create a barrier-free path to the main house, ensuring that the space is accessible for wheelchair users without any steps. The mix of architectural styles, stemming from buildings converted over a long period, called for simplifying and removing unnecessary features to unify the overall aesthetic. The goal was to make the facades feel cohesive and harmonious, blending seamlessly as one unit.
The main path to the house, leading uphill, is partially framed by retaining walls supporting the upper terrace of the yard. A centrally positioned deck, placed above the accumulation tank and near the future wellness area, provides a sunlit space for relaxation. The planting scheme complements the buildings, softening the hard lines of the structures while creating a welcoming garden atmosphere. Generous lawn areas offer a space for children to play, ensuring the garden serves both as a peaceful retreat and a functional, family-friendly space.
